What is the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program?
The US Youth Soccer ODP Philosophy
To identify players of the highest caliber on a continuing and consistent basis, which will lead to increased success for the U.S. National Teams in the international arena.
Purpose
The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.
What are the Benefits of Participating in US Youth Soccer ODP?
1. Development as a player. The opportunity to train and play with the best player’s in one’s age group.
2. Quality instruction from nationally licensed coaches.
3. Quality competition. Games against other state association ODP teams.
4. Exposure to regional and national team coaches.
5. The opportunity to represent one’s state, region, or country in competition.
6. Exposure to college coaches.
How are Players Selected for NC ODP?
Players are selected for the NC ODP program on the basis of open tryouts. These tryouts are conducted by state association coaches who are recognized for their ability to identify and train players with superior skills. Some state associations combine scouting techniques and invitations to certain players with the open tryouts. Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player:
1. Technique
2. Tactics
3. Fitness and Athletic Ability
4. Psychological Component (attitude)
Who can participate in NC ODP?
The 2024-25 NC ODP program is for players born in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. *Players born in 2014 may register to be evaluated with the 2013 age group.*
Players must be registered with NC Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA) in order to register for evaluations. If your child is not registered currently with NCYSA or their name is not found when registering, there could be several reasons:
- The way you entered your child’s name is different than the way the registrar for their club team entered their name
- Your child plays on a team that is not registered with NCYSA
- Your child’s team plays in the spring ONLY
- Your child’s info is entered incorrectly in the NC Youth Soccer database
- Your Child is playing in a youth club that is not a NCYSA Member Association
Please email ODP Technical Staff if you are having trouble finding your player’s information in the NCYSA database and believe they should be in there.
If you know their information will not be found in the NCYSA database, you can still register for ODP, you will just need to register to NCYSA at the same time by clicking “Add New” when the red box pops up. You will need to email a copy of your player’s birth certificate to ODP Technical Staff after you complete registration.
NOTE: FIFA requires International Clearance for all players born in a foreign country, including US citizens born abroad. Please read the USSF Minimum ITC Requirement document attached here for more information. If you have additional questions, please contact the NCYSA Registration department.
For players who reside outside of North Carolina who want to play ODP in NC, you must have an interstate permission form on file with “NC” designated as your player’s ODP state. You may have completed this form if your player currently plays club soccer with a NCYSA association. If you have questions or need assistance with this, please email ODP Technical Staff at odp@ncsoccer.org. Please note that a player can tryout/participate in one state only for each ODP season.
What are NC ODP Evaluations?
A player will attend the corresponding NC ODP Evaluation sessions for their Age Group (*subject to when they registered) to train, compete and be observed by the Age Group Director & NC ODP Staff.
During the evaluation process, NC ODP Staff has access to the players name and jersey number ONLY. Club information is not provided to the Age Group Director or the NC ODP Staff during Evaluations.
Following the final NC ODP Evaluation session for an age group, players are either selected to continue or are released from the NC ODP Program for the year.
Is Financial Assistance Available?
Financial assistance is available for those that demonstrate a need. Families that need to apply for financial assistance can request an application by contacting ODP Technical Staff, at odp@ncsoccer.org. *Please note that all players – regardless of their need for financial assistance – may be required to pay a portion of their registration fees. Applications that are not complete will not be submitted to the ODP Scholarship Committee; they will be returned to you for completion and re-submission prior to being considered. Scholarships are not retroactive.
Financial assistance is accepted on a rolling basis as we understand that people’s situations can change unexpectedly, however we strongly suggest completed applications be received by our staff ASAP. Financial assistance is not retroactive and will only apply to fees accrued after your application has been approved. Please apply early as funds are limited.
